Dear Parents/Carers, Students and Friends of Prospect High School,
Australian Teacher Aide/Assistants week.
Last week was Australian Teacher Aide/Assistant Appreciation week. I would like to thank and acknowledge our Teacher Assistants for the tireless support that they give teachers in classrooms, on excursions and in the grounds. While Teacher Assistants often have specific times and specific students to work with, they go above and beyond, helping many students and spending their own time supporting students. A BIG thanks this year, in particular, for the support of learners, parents and staff during the Covid online learning phase.
My Education - Career and Life Planning Day
My Education is a Kindergarten to Year 12 approach to career and life planning in schools that will support students to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes needed for successful planning and making informed choices for their future. Prospect High School has a co-ordinated whole school approach called Career and Life Planning. Through this curriculum, students learn skills, knowledge and understandings to make informed decisions about work and career pathways and life decisions essential to an individual’s social and economic wellbeing and that of the broader community. Career and Life Planning, together with our partnership with the Beacon Foundation, engages with local and Tasmanian businesses and industries to link education with students’ future employment options. Last Thursday, Years 7-9 students experienced a range of activities that included a forestry presentation and trip to Cluan Tier, presentations from Tasmanian Police and Woolworths, and speed careering. Thanks to representatives from the nursing and hairdressing industries, SES, Tasmanian Fire Service, Property Wise, ADF, Gold Star Automotive, and Kurivita Photography. Grade 10 students spent the day at Newstead College and Launceston College becoming familiar with course offerings and facilities.
Course Selection Process
Over the last couple of weeks, 2021 course offerings have been explained and clips shown to Years 7, 8 and 9 students to assist them with making informed decisions for next year. Students are encouraged not to choose subjects because their friends are doing the same, but to think of their future education and career paths. The selection of subjects is to be completed online and is due by the end of this week.

We had the opportunity to meet and talk to people who have careers in the forestry industry and visit a logging coop where we got to witness and learn about different machinery and the harvesting of wood. We also got to participate in activities such as building a tool-box and working with simulators. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience and gained a lot of knowledge about the industry.

Newstead College and Launceston College Orientation Tours

Many students cited that they found the experience highly informative and a fantastic opportunity to tour both colleges, inspect the facilities, meet some of the college teaching staff, and learn more about the breadth of subjects on offer. There are a variety of ways to study next year, with courses being offered at Prospect High School and other extension schools throughout Northern Tasmania. There is also a great deal of flexibility, with some students electing to undertake a shared enrolments, in order to study a specialised subject or to study in an environment that best suits their needs.
