Dear Parents, Students and Friends of Prospect High School
Leadership Assembly
Yesterday, the 2021 Grade 10 Leaders were presented with their badges and blazers. Mr Brad Reardon, treasurer of the School Association and former co-president of the 2017 SLB, was the guest speaker and the talented Jamisen performed a musical item. Brad spoke about his pathway since leaving high school and delivered the important message to students that when things happen and don’t go their way, they should not give up. He also said for students to dream big, take chances and not to be afraid to fail or make mistakes. Brad said that students should be prepared for many failures and mistakes but know that there is support and success will happen. He said that he would have appreciated this advice at high school as it would have prepared him for his journey over the last few years. Students who were awarded Eagle awards, and the Rats of Tobruk awards were also presented with certificates. Thanks to Chair of the School Association, Mr Russell Kerr, Grade 10 Senior Grade Leader, Mrs Carmen Slore, and Grade Leader, Mr Steve Andrews, who assisted with the presentation of certificates and badges. Congratulations to all student leaders who have been elected to the positions of Support Leaders, Sports Leaders and to the Student Leader Board. The 2021 Student Leader Board did an excellent job in hosting the assembly, and I am sure we can look forward to big things from all our leaders. A big thank you to everyone for this very successful event. This includes Ms Sandra Da Paoli for overall co-ordination and organisation, Mr Josh Cassidy for catering, Mr Phil Van Ash and Mr Andrew Towns for gym set up, and Mr Tony Gutierrez for music preparation and performance, the administration team for invitations and programs, and student leaders for their help with organisation and presentation. Thank you to the friends and family who attended the assembly and stayed for refreshments afterwards. This was a very proud occasion for our 2021 leaders and bursary recipients.
Welcome Barbecue
It was lovely to see families and Prospect High School staff mingling and reacquainting and/or getting to know one another at the Welcome Barbecue recently. Many thanks to the SLB for organising the barbecue and to musicians Julia, Bailey, Christopher and Summer. We are very thankful to families who came along and appreciate your commitment to the school.
School Association
The first School Association meeting for 2021 was held on Tuesday. We welcomed new members and were presented with designs for the new hats and caps which will soon to be available for students to purchase. The suggestion of a school cap and/or hat was raised by parents through the school association. Students were surveyed and supportive of both a cap and hat and contributed to the design. The next meeting will be on Tuesday 30th March at 5.00pm in the meeting room. There will be a short AGM and then a general meeting. New members are welcome to join, and the meetings run for approximately an hour. As you can see this is a great opportunity for parents to keep informed of our improvement journey, opportunities available for students, and also be part of the decision-making processes at Prospect High School.
Grade 11/12
Grade 11 and 12 students have made a great start with their learning. Enrolments have been increasing each year, as have subject offerings and the flexible, tailored learning options. Students have been participating in a range of activities and are enjoying the flexible learning space, a relaxing common area with new furniture and catering facilities. For enquiries please contact Jennifer Pollard on 6344 4744 or jennifer.pollard@education.tas.gov.au.
Covid update
Finally, a reminder to families that Covid 19 restrictions are still in please as per Public Health advice. We ask visitors to the school to maintain 1.5 metre social distancing and use provided sanitiser or arrival. It would be appreciated if you could phone the school to discuss matters rather than coming in person when possible. If students are unwell, please keep them at home in a restful and safe environment. Parents collecting students at the end of day are requested to stay in their cars and depart the school promptly. Cleaning and hygiene measures implemented last year will continue until otherwise advised.

Growing out and up!
Our herbs are growing nicely and so is the range of subjects on our scope. In response to student interest, we’re adding Japanese 2 and Music Ensemble 2 to our 11/12 subject offering. Music Ensemble will run on Friday afternoons; it’ll be a fun and chilled way to end the week and cruise into the weekend. If you’d like to add an extra 5 points to your TCE, if you like jamming with friends, and if you’ve got Friday afternoons free, please contact Jennifer Pollard to discuss enrolling in our Music Ensemble course.
Celebrating the successes of our 11 and 12 students, we congratulate Nathan on his recent employment. Nathan - we wish you all the very best as you start to learn the ropes of earthworks and operating earth moving machinery. We’ll miss your dry sense of humour and gentle presence, but we’ve no doubt that you’ll be an asset to your workplace and a wonderful team member. All the very, very best.
In weeks 3 and 4, we really kicked off our Catering classes in Grade 9/10 and in Half Year Catering in Year 8.
We catered for morning and afternoon teas with the senior classes preparing delicious treats for our Grade 7 and 8 Validation Form class winners and also for a Library Support Staff pick me up on Tuesday afternoon.
In Half Year Catering Grade 8 we commenced our Thursday lunchtime take away with students preparing healthy nachos and a summer strawberry and watermelon slushie. We sold out early and will make sure we boost our efforts next week for the milkshakes and jacket potatoes on offer! BIG thanks to Chance Ebery and William Jennings for giving up their lunch hour to serve our customers ?
All classes showed great attention to detail and presentation skills are improving. We look forward to catering for more functions as the year progresses!

Prospect High School eLibrary. eBooks are available 24hrs a day to students on their laptops at school and at home on any device. There are around 2000 books for students to choose from, with many of them being different to those we have in our school library. Students can create their own 'saved' list of books that they want to read later, borrow up to three books a month, and place a hold on a book. To access, students will need to contact the library (Grade 7 students and new students) to receive an invitation to join the 'Library’ Canvas page. Instructions to access the eLibrary will then be provided to students.

Rated by Melissa Grey
Dystopian Fiction 12+years
The ratings are real. One number, 0 to 100, determines your place in society. Earn a high rating, and the world is yours for the taking. But fall to zero, and you may as well cease to exist. Societies thrive on order, and the Rating System is the ultimate symbol of organised social mobility. The higher it soars, the more valued you are. The lower it plummets, the harder you must work to improve yourself.
Read LessDuring lunchtime, many students have enjoyed time together sewing pocket hearts for themselves or to give as gifts to friends and family. The idea for this activity came from the 1000 hearts project that started in Hobart in 2016. The founder made and gave away 1000 pocket hearts to offer comfort, love and hope to anyone who needed it. This activity provided an opportunity for students to meet new people, enjoy some time in the library, and learn and practice some new skills. It was a very popular activity and one we will run again during the year.
