Dear Parents, Students and Friends of Prospect High School,
Teacher Assistant Appreciation
Last week, Prospect High School and the DoE acknowledged the work of Teacher Assistants. We are very lucky to have a dedicated and caring team who go above and beyond for all our school community. The range of Teacher Assistant duties is vast, and they provide support and assistance to a diverse number of students as well as at the elbow assistance for teachers. On behalf of all staff and students at Prospect High School THANK YOU!

I had the pleasure of attending some Winter Sports finals this week. Well done to the senior netball, senior girls football and senior boys football, junior netball, junior soccer and junior football teams who made the finals. Congratulations to players and coaches of the senior netball team, junior soccer and junior and senior boys football team who won their games. All players showed great sportsmanship and represented Prospect High School with pride.
2022 Course Selections
Students in Grade 7, 8 and 9 will be choosing optional subjects for 2022 in the coming week. There will be information sessions for all students today and course selection information will also be released online for parents to view. Students are encouraged to discuss course selections with parents and will be required to return completed forms signed by parents on Friday, September 17th. I would like to make parents and students aware of the following important points :
- Students are encouraged to choose option subjects that align with interests, skills, and possible future pathways.
- It is expected that students will consult with their parents before choosing option subjects.
- Students are reminded to make their own subject choices; it is not appropriate for students to choose the same option subjects to be with their friends.
- It is important to note that option subjects will only run if sufficient students select the option and class numbers are viable and resources are not over-extended.
Rock Challenge
I am delighted to announce that Prospect High School has two finalists in the acoustic section of the Tasmanian Rock Challenge Final. Summa and Julia will compete tonight at Launceston Conference Centre (South Launceston, TAS). Congratulations to the girls for making it to the finals, and good luck tonight. Thanks to Mr Tony Gutierrez for his encouragement and support.
Student Success
Congratulations to Georgia who has been selected in the state U15 Tasmanian Devils girls football team, and to Ebony for success with her Working on Water 2021 application.
Kind regards

2022 COURSE SELECTION PROCESS FOR GRADE 7, 8, 9 STUDENTS
Option Subject selection processes are now underway for Prospect High School 2022 Grades 8, 9 and 10 students.
Current students in Grades 7, 8, 9 need to select two full year and two half year option courses for 2022 by 5:00 pm on Friday September 17th.
Please note, students in Grades 7 to 10 study English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities and Social Sciences and Health and Physical Education as compulsory subjects. Please also note, separate information is distributed for 2022 Grade 7 students.
It is essential that parent/guardians support and oversee this subject selection process for students. Students need to select their preferences carefully, as subject changes are only accommodated in extenuating circumstances.
On our school website you will find further information to assist with course selection, such as videos about subjects, Option Subject Guides (which contain information about each subject) and other useful resources relevant to future pathways (including year 11/12). You can access this website via the link below or QR code.
https://prospecthigh.education.tas.edu.au/Pages/OptionSubjects.aspx
All relevant instructions for course selections have been sent home to students in individualised letters.
Students MUST make course selections by 5:00 pm Friday September 17th.

UTAS Science Investigation Awards
On Tuesday 31st of August, Dante Fitzgerald from 7-5 Science entered a project that he has been working on in Tier 2 Science into the University of Tasmania Science Investigation Awards. His project focused on the “5 second rule” and was entered into the secondary health category. Many schools attended, and Dante presented to numerous rounds of judges. At the end of the day, he was advised he had been successful in winning a prize. Dante then attended an awards ceremony at the University of Tasmania on Wednesday evening where he was presented with a ‘Highly Commended’ certificate and prize book.
Congratulations to Dante on all of his efforts towards this project and for representing Prospect High School so well. What a great experience to be a part of.
Jaci Noonan
On Thursday the 19th of August a group of Grade 9 and 10 students from Prospect High School Catering and Food Specialisations classes were able to participate in the Hospitality Showcase presented by the Tasmanian Hotel Association.
We were able to explore a range of different career paths in hospitality starting with cooking. A chef talked to us about opportunities and jobs in the local industry, and she discussed the pathways for a career in hospitality. She also told us that becoming a chef could lead us into a whole new range of roles that we would never have thought of. We then got to cook omelettes where we talked about temperature and consistency- and how to make the perfect omelette.
Our next station was the Barista - were she showed us step-by-step how to use the coffee machine. She talked about her career in hospitality and how it gave her flexibility to travel across the world. We then got to make our own coffees we were shown how to properly texturise the milk and how to do coffee art.
At the bar demonstration, we were lucky enough to be able to try our hand at mocktails. We could use the equipment after the instructor showed us the basic techniques. We then created some delicious drinks which we are keen to try out in the Eagle’s Nest Café at school!
Thanks to Mrs Hawkins and Mr Cassidy for taking us!

Junior Girls Netball Division 1
The PHS Junior 1st played a fantastic game against DHS in the NHSSA Netball Grand Final yesterday. It was a cold afternoon and both teams were fighting against the wind throughout the whole game. PHS girls fought hard, but unfortunately were unable to come away with the win. The match was high-quality netball and both teams played in high spirits. Congratulations to DHS, and well done to the PHS Junior 1st girls on a wonderful season.
Senior Girls Netball Division 3
On Wednesday afternoon, September 8, the senior netball grand finals were held at Hoblers Bridge. Our third division team persisted throughout the entire season, facing and overcoming obstacles of injuries and lack of numbers. Even so, the girls fought hard, won their games, and secured a hard-earned spot in the grand final, against worthy opponents, Campbell Town District High School. The first steps on court were full of adrenaline and nerves, leaving the girls eager for the starting siren to sound. As the game progressed, both teams were neck and neck, proving to be an equal match that could go either way. Prospect played a strong second quarter, but to their dismay, they were faced with an injury. This left them down a valuable player and position. With no subs, they were forced to continue the rest of the game with only six. The team scraped through, gave it their all, and came out with the win, by a solid three points.
Junior 2nds Football
In tough wintery conditions, Prospect High School came up against a determined Queechy High School. With strong blustery winds only one point was scored at the northern end of the ground, resulting in our team kicking towards the south end dominating the scoring and maintaining a majority of possession. Going into the last quarter, Prospect was trailing Queechy by two points, however, the team remained positive knowing they were kicking with the wind to dominate the final quarter to win by 28 points. Gus and Brady had the two highlights for the day with Gus scoring a goal from the centre square and receiving the MVP medallion for best on the ground. The forward line pressure by Brady gained two holding the ball decisions which resulted in shots on goal. Overall, it was a fantastic season going through undefeated.
Senior Girls AFLW
The 9/10 Girls football team were a surprise team to be playing off in the AFLW grand final after their upset semi-final win. After the roster season, the girls snuck into 4th place meaning they would play off against top of the ladder team, Cressy, in a semi-final. The Prospect girls were behind all game, however, a miraculous goal from the boundary line after the final siren courtesy of Jorja mean that the Prospect girls football team would play off in the Grand Final for the second year in a row.
The conditions at Prospect Park for the Grand Final day were fantastic. There were mild temperatures, clear skies and a breeze that favoured the southern end. Queechy were kicking to the scoring end in the first quarter and got out to a fast start with two early goals. Although Queechy got out to a quick lead the Prospect Eagles remained focussed on slowly reeling in the deficit and as the game went on the girls progressively looked more likely of taking the lead at some point.
Our Prospect team never gave up despite only having 15 players for the whole game which meant we were one player down on the field without any subs on the interchange bench. We slowly crept back into the game as time went on, however when the final siren sounded we were behind by 8 points. All staff that were present at the game were incredibly proud of how the girls carried themselves throughout the entire game, they showed great determination, effort and attitude and never gave up.
A special mention must go to Taja who was awarded the Best On Ground medal after the game which is a tremendous achievement for Taja who led from the front all day. Co-coaches Mr Bergamin and Mr Murfet would like the thank the girls for all the effort that they put in throughout the season and congratulate them for making it all the way to the Grand Final.
Div 2 Football Final
Prospect vs Brooks
Coach: Steven Andrews
Captain: Noah Harrison
Vice Captains: Cy, Ethan and Ash
On Wednesday the 8th of September the NHSSA Grand Finals were held. In the grand final were Prospect and Brooks. They have played each other three times during the year and Prospect have won all of them. Prospect were the team to beat all year. Brooks coming in as underdogs gave them a fair chance to steal this one. It was quite a windy day, not favouring any end. We were in for a very high pressured, tough, contested game of finals footy.
First quarter was quite a battle. Prospect had the upper hand 11-0. Prospect was controlling the game by having most of the possession.
Second quarter was very similar to the first - low scoring. Both teams had their opportunities, but could very rarely convert. Brooks were within 6 points.
Half-time it was a very tough battle. Few of the boys had some icy poles, some had lollies to regain some energy. All the boys were up and about and keen to get back out there. After some final words from Mr Andrews in the half-time huddle, it was game on again.
Third quarter was the highest scoring quarter. Prospect making the most of their opportunities kicking out to a 3-goal lead. Prospect had all the momentum going into the last quarter.
The last quarter was a very high-pressured quarter. A few momentum swings going each way. It was a thrilling finish. Prospect held on by winning by 10 points. Final scores: Prospect 41 Brooks 31
Thanks to everyone that was involved.
On Sunday the 29th of August, eight brave, intrepid students from across the school battled inclement weather, weekend brain fog, a freezing gym and tiny worktables to compete in the 2021 MAT Northern Maths Relay Heats. Up against the clock and other seasoned relay teams, our 7/8 and 9/10 teams performed admirably with the juniors finishing just one question away from third place! The questions were sometimes strange and always tough. Our students displayed perseverance, intelligence and lateral thinking, and they came away with smiles on their faces and a fancy certificate as a memento.
Once again, we celebrated Book Week in the library this year. Mrs Williams welcomed students from each class to view our Reading Expo, where a range of new and popular books were on display for students to view and select for our school library. There were also competitions and events throughout the week, including lunchtime trivia, Book in a Jar & Guess the Young Adult Book of the Year. The highlight of the week was our Book Week writing competition which encouraged students to be creative with the Book Week theme ‘Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds’. This culminated in a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party in the library for those students who entered. Congratulations to our winners Gabrielle & Mary!
