At the recent School Association AGM meeting the following were re-elected/elected to the positions: School Chair - Russell Kerr, Treasurer - Brad Reardon, Community Member - Annie Milne and Staff Member - Carolyn Abraham. We were also updated on the Reconciliation Action Plan designed to incorporate perspectives of Aboriginal and Torres Island in education. Congratulations to Summer and Sienna for their achievements in the Launceston Music Competition on Tuesday evening. Prospect High School is very proud of these up-and-coming artists.
Transition News
Transition talks, visits and pathway plans have begun for students who will be Grade 7 and Grade 11 in 2023.
Tours of Prospect High School have been a feature for students and parents of Grade 6 families recently. Visits of students from our feeder schools (Bracknell, Hagley, Summerdale, West Launceston and Glen Dhu) have commenced as have representatives from Prospect High School to the primary schools. Grade 10 students have commenced course counselling, pathway planning for future careers and visits to colleges and schools. Transition activities will continue throughout Terms 2, 3 and 4.
Covid Update
Students are still required to wear masks when indoors at school. Other protective measures include hand sanitisers in all classrooms and common spaces, air purifiers and air conditioners to ensure good airflow in all classrooms. We have communicated recent changes to rules for close contacts. This information also appears later in this newsletter. If more RAT kits are required students may collect these from the office.
Finally, thank you to parents/carers for your support of our uniform. Students feel an increased sense of connection and pride wearing full school uniform. They are looking magnificent in winter uniform.
Kind regards
Lee Barker

On Tuesday 17th May, 110 Grade Ten students and staff received their Grade 10 Varsity jackets. The jackets showcase student’s surnames on the back, along with an embroidered ‘22’. All students were extremely excited upon their arrival and were keen to wear a rather stylish and warm addition to their school uniform. These jackets are a lovely memento for our year tens to keep for many years ahead.
Last Tuesday the students of Prospect High School participated in the 2022 cross country carnival. Grade 7 and 8’s took part during lesson 2 and the grade 9 and 10’s completed the course in lesson 3. Thankfully we were treated to a nice sunny day and all those who took part were offered a tasty zooper dooper at the finish line. The cross country offers students the opportunity to express themselves through numerous of our focussed learning dispositions at Prospect, such as being persistent, motivated and collaborative, and there was plenty of this displayed throughout the day.

Imogen
Jafar and a citizen Agrabah*
- Why did you want to be involved in this production?
I’ve been interested in theatre for a long time, seeing previous Prospect High School and local college productions in the past really inspired me, and it seemed like it would just be a great experience.
- Who is your favourite character and why?
I don’t have a favourite character, but if I had to choose, I would probably say Iago (Jafar’s sidekick), because they are a sort of chaotic-fun character with a good personality.
- What is your role in this production and what are you enjoying about it?
I play Jafar. Jafar is a good role, because he has a lot of power and he knows that, so as Jafar you ‘stride’ and know everyone else’s place. I like that he has a few scenes that really show you what he’s about, trying constantly to become sultan of Agrabah.
- What’s the biggest challenge been for you so far?
Probably when some of the rehearsals don’t go as fast as we have planned. Getting behind schedule isn’t the worst thing, but it doesn’t always feel easy to get back on track.
- What are you most excited for?
I love the idea of performing on stage, the audience following along. I love when you can feel the character change the mood of the room, so I would have to say that I’m most excited for performing to the public.
- What’s been the most enjoyable thing about production so far?
The people. We truly have a great class both on and off stage, everyone is helping to make this production great.
- What would you say to people who want to be involved in production in future years?
Do it. It is an amazing experience and you’ll be glad you did it. It doesn’t matter who you are, if you want to perform then perform as best as you can, production is a great way to do that.
*Did you know that we are using double casting this year?
This means that Imogen will play Jafar for the Tuesday Opening Night Performance, Wednesday Night Public Performance and Thursday School Matinee; and a citizen of Agrabah on the Wednesday School Matinee, and Thursday Night Public Performance and Friday School Matinee

Australia's Biggest Morning Tea
On Thursday the 19th of May PHS Senior Secondary and 9/10 Catering hosted Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea events to raise money for the Cancer Council.
We had a guess the lollies in the jar competition, a morning tea quiz with questions about coffee, a cake stall and morning tea platters for staff.
All the events were very well received and we raised over $470.00! Big Thanks to all that supported our day and this worthy cause!
Tasmanian All Schools Mountain Bike Championships
On Friday the 20th of May, 19 students represented Prospect High School at the Tasmanian All Schools Mountain Bike Championships held at Trevallyn Recreation Area. Students participated in a XCO (Cross Country) style event over a number of laps around an undulating and technical course with big hill climbs, as well as a timed downhill event. All students gave it their all with some good finishes amongst the top riders in the state. Gus was the 2nd fastest U17 male rider on the timed downhill section. Students should be congratulated on their efforts and resilience at the event.
Cody - collaborative, motivated and flexible
Cody was an invaluable member of the service crew at Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea last Thursday. He went the extra mile and offered to stay - ending up giving up both his recesses to help clean up. He was polite, very helpful and a wonderful example of what a good catering student should be.
Ondene - collaborative, curious and motivated
Ondene has only had three lessons in Barista Basics and remarkably has all but mastered the coffee machine. She is enthusiastic, diligent and completes cleaning tasks without prompting. She listens to peer instruction and takes all feedback onboard. I am very excited about what she can do in this area given more time.
Georgia , Sofia , Danielle , Georgia and Hayley - collaborative, creative and persistent.
Together these students planned, created, prepared and created a wedding cake for our cleaner Darryl-Ann. They did such a wonderful job – the results were extremely professional and exactly what the client wanted. They operated outside of their comfort zone and took it in their stride. It was a very rewarding extension task- not only for them but for me as a teacher to see how much they shone.
Bike Doctors is a program at PHS where Grade 7-10's help fix and repair bikes for charity. The majority of the bikes are given to charity, but some are sold. All funds from purchased bikes and bike parts will go directly back into the program to help buy tools and parts for our Bike Doctor program. We appreciated the support.

This is in line with the Department of Education and Public Health guidelines. Information will be passed on if there is an increasing number of cases in your child’s class.
LEARNING FROM HOME
Learning from home is still available through the Virtual Learning Centre for students who test positive for COVID.
Students last week worked on the disposition of collaboration to create and design a shelter. Motivation was a key in ensuring the hut was built within 40 minutes.
Week 4 has been performance week in Grade 7 Drama for 7.3 and 7.4. Students have been working since the beginning of term to develop a scene from script to performance. They began by using Close Reading to discover story, characters and subtext, and then experimented to find ways to bring their scene to life. They conveyed information through verbal and non-verbal communication, technical elements such as lighting and sound, as well as selecting costume and building set to create atmosphere and engage an audience. They rose to the challenge and created some really fun and engaging scenes. Fantastic! Mrs Viney
