Transition
Students and parents of Prospect High School’s feeder primary schools (Hagley, Summerdale, Bracknell, West Launceston and Glen Dhu) have been enjoying a variety of activities this term. Our students have been visiting primary schools and giving an overview of our learning programs and opportunities. Many groups of students have been taken on tours of our school and uptake of parent tours has been excellent. Interested students were able to compete in our cross country and Hagley were recently treated to some science activities. Many thanks to our transition team, in particular to Mr Bergamin, Mr Poke and Mr Willard for your work.
Attendance At School Matters- Making Every Minute Count!
It is vital that students attend school every day. A sense of purpose and commitment is achieved with regular attendance. Every child has a chance of success with their learning when they attend regularly. Please encourage your children to value their education and help them become organised and attend every day. Under Tasmanian law, you must make sure your child of school age is enrolled and attends school all day, every school day unless they have an acceptable reason. Illness, doing work experience or competing in a school sporting event are acceptable reasons for being absent from school.
The DoE Attendance Policy states;
“Consistent attendance at school is critical to achieving positive educational outcomes and keeping students engaged in their learning. Parents/guardians have a legal obligation to ensure a child is enrolled in and attending school or is registered for home education. “
Higher student attendance at school is associated, on average, with higher student achievement. Hence regular school attendance will mean that your child has a better chance in life. They learn better, make friends, are happier and have a brighter future.
Please avoid keeping your child away from school for: birthdays, shopping, visiting family and friends, if they sleep in, looking after other children, haircuts, etc. Routine medical or other health appointments should be made either before or after school or during the school holidays.
Parents/carers must let the school know the reason why your child has been absent.
The following chart highlights the impact of non-attendance over time. The chart shows the cumulative effect of persistent non-attendance over a child’s years of schooling.

Please make every effort to assist your child to be on time to school and not late. Lateness can cause students to feel embarrassed, disorganised and anxious. They miss important notices and reminders at the start of the day from the daily notes. They also miss important interactions with friends and teachers. This is often the most productive time of the day however, it can be hard for students to become engaged in learning and settled when they arrive late and cannot take advantage of this valuable learning time.
One of the most important things you can do to ensure your child has a bright future is to make sure he or she is not late and makes the whole day count, every day. If you are having problems getting your child to school for some of these reasons, please contact the Care teacher, Grade Leader or Senior Grade Leader as soon as possible for advice and support.
Kind regards
Lee Barker

Dear Evan Hansen by Val Emmich
Family/Relationships Grade 10+
When a letter that was never meant to be seen by anyone draws high school senior Evan Hansen into a family's grief over the loss of their son, he is given the chance of a lifetime: to belong. He just has to stick to a lie he never meant to tell, that the notoriously troubled Connor Murphy was his secret best friend. Suddenly, Evan isn't invisible anymore. And Connor's parents, with their beautiful home on the other side of town, have taken him in like he was their own, desperate to know more about their enigmatic son from his 'closest friend'.
As Evan gets pulled deeper into their family, he knows that what he's doing can't be right, but if he's helping people, how wrong can it be? Every day is amazing. Until everything is in danger of unravelling and he comes face to face with his greatest obstacle: himself.
Remind Me Why I’m Here by Kat Colmer
Friends/relationships Australian Author
When 18 year-old Maya leaves Chicago for a six week Australian home stay, she assumes she's heading to beautiful Barangaroo with its famous Sydney Harbour views - NOT Barangaroo Creek, a stinking hot, fly-ridden, wi-fi dead zone hours from a decent body of water. Add her host brother, Gus, who wishes she landed in someone else's sheep paddock, and Maya is convinced she's in for six weeks of Hicksville hell. Gus has an important trip planned this summer- a trip that does NOT include helping an animal-phobic girl from the States tick off items on her seriously cliched Aussie must-do list.
Haunted: Ghost Stories to Chill Your Blood by various authors

Watch your step as you take a ghost walk around the ancient city of York and a long-ago woodland which is reawakening. Be warned of the drowned boy who will stop at nothing to find someone to play with for all time. Look into the mirror, where a lost child lurks, ready to pull you in, and try not to cry out at the monstrous creatures prowling for their next victim. Some stories will make you scream, some will make you shiver – but all will haunt you long after you've put the book down.

The grade 9 team have introduced a new intitiative for students to make meaningful connections with their peers. We launched our 'craft session' this week in The Nest Cafe'. If you have an interest in craft and want to make some new connections, please join us next Tuesday. *materials are provided.
We have been fortunate to have received a mini makeover of our barista area in the café recently. Attractive and professional looking new cupboards and splashbacks were fitted to really improve the space under the espresso machine.
We have been busy hosting Summerdale Primary for their transition tours and as part of their customer information unit the PHS Senior Secondary Cert I Hospitality students have given barista demonstrations and shared general information about our exciting learning area.
Out the back, the Catering students have been participating in a test kitchen. Students are trialling menu items for staff who have been enjoying ready prepared meals to take home and freeze or heat and eat. In addition to costing, preparing and cooking the meals students have been reviewing the labelling requirements and instructions which need to be included for saleable food. As always, our canteen specials are available every Tuesday for lunch and we have a new product- Banana Bread which is also going to be available Gluten Free. Please keep an eye out for our social media posts and order through the QKR app.

Read LessGrade 9/10 Catering students have been honing their cake decorating skills, completing a couple of celebration cakes for staff recently.
Grade 10 students Sofia, Hayley, Tori, Georgia W, Georgia R and Dani all expressed interest in completing an extension task and considering their love of all things baking we decided that cake decorating would be the task that challenged them.
We made a two tiered chocolate cake with buttercream frosting and fresh flowers for a staff member’s wedding and a fun Trolls inspired rainbow cake for a teacher’s 3 year old niece! Both cakes involved planning and designing, preparation and adding the final flourishes to finish.
I would like to congratulate all the students on their amazing work ethic and attention to detail. Well Done!
