Dear Parents/Guardians, Students and Friends of Prospect High School,
Mid-Year Reporting 2022
Next week students will receive mid-year reports which provides achievement progress to date, an indication of their work habits with regards to effort, attitude, organisation and task completion, and attendance at school.
The new look report will show your child’s learning achievement differently. A new 9-point visual scale replaces A-E ratings for students in Years 1 to 10.
The 9-point scale will show more specifically where your child’s learning achievement is against the expected standard for their year level.
There will be no teacher comments on the report. Parent/teacher/student conferences will again be offered in the final week of term. These are a great opportunity to discuss how your child is progressing with their learning. Term 4 reports will also be in this format.
For more information about the changes to reports please visit the Department of Education’s website at: Reporting - The Department of Education Tasmania1. The Department have produced a video to explain the changes.
If your child is in Years 11–12 reports are issued to students twice a year. Reports for Years 11–12 cover progress in subjects against Tasmanian Assessment, Standards and Certification course criteria. Reports for Years 11–12 are also issued where students are undertaking a Vocational Education and Training programme and these indicate how students are meeting units of competence.
Parent-Teacher-Student Conferences
Information for access to face-to-face conversations, telephone or online conversations will be provided with reports to discuss the progress your child has made and the steps they can take to build on that learning for the remainder of the year.
Conferences will be held in week 10, the final week of term. As with last year Parent-Teacher-Student Conferences will be structured in a way that valuable feedback can be given. Research shows that a strong and effective feedback culture is one in which both students and parents/guardians are involved in feedback conversations.
To guide and assist the parent-teacher-student conversations and ensure consistency of approach, we have compiled questions. You are encouraged to discuss these questions with your child prior to attending the parent-teacher-student conversation.
- What areas of this subject are going well for you?
- Which areas of this subject do you see as a future focus for you? What support and action do I need to help you with?
- What progress would you like to have made in this subject by the end of the year?
- Is there anything else you would like to discuss?
We look forward to seeing you at Parent-Teacher-Student conferences.
Career and Life Planning
Last Monday students participated in Career and Life Planning. The program ensures students in Years 7-12 learn skills and knowledge to discover their future career pathways based on their interests and suitability. Our partnership with Beacon Foundation and members of the community, businesses and industry provides great opportunities for students to explore a range of career options including areas in which there is a skill shortage. Thanks to Ms Gill for co-ordinating this program. Students were presented with the following opportunities:
Grade 7 – Speed Careering
Grade 8 – Timberlink presentation and Speed Careering
Grade 9 – Speed Careering, RAAF video and Careerify (What is TCE/VET?)
Grade 10 – Resume, MyFutures and Careerify websites

Public Health has advised that from Monday 27 June 2022, face masks are no longer mandatory in schools and Child and Family Learning Centres. This is because of reduced COVID-19 cases in our community.
It’s important to continue to:
- stay at home if unwell, and get tested
- practise COVID-safe behaviours such as frequent handwashing and sanitising
- be up to date with your COVID-19 vaccinations.
Students, staff and visitors are supported to continue to wear face masks if they choose to. Face masks are still available at Prospect High School if you need them.
When face masks are required
If you’re a close contact, you are still required to wear a face mask indoors as per current Public Health advice.
From time-to-time Prospect High School might identify activities or situations where masks are required to be worn. We ask for your support when this happens and know that it is in the best interests of our students, staff and Prospect High School.
Our staff will continue to wear masks when working closely with students who are vulnerable to COVID-19.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us directly to discuss.
For more information about COVID-19, please visit the Tasmanian Government Coronavirus website or contact the Tasmanian Public Health Hotline on 1800 671 738, or Department of Education COVID-19 Support Hotline at COVID19support@education.tas.gov.au or on 1800 816 057.

Summer
Stage Manager
- Why did you want to be involved in this production?
Because it sounded like a fun opportunity to be a part of something. Plus I have seen previous productions and they looked like fun, especially creating something and having my own ideas come to life.
- Who is your favourite character and why?
I don’t know who my favourite would be, but I would say Jasmine is up there. She is independent, doesn’t follow the rules, makes her own choices and just wants to find true love.
- What is your role in this production and what are you enjoying about it?
I am the stage manager, I love the role because I get to do a bit of every off-stage thing, I like the creative freedom the role has, and I get to input my ideas.
- What’s the biggest challenge been for you so far?
My biggest challenge would be learning the new language and how to do blocking notes, I hadn’t been in drama before so I didn’t know how to do them at first but now I can.
- What are you most excited for?
To be able to show off what we all have created to a live audience and show them how much effort we have put into this production.
- What’s been the most enjoyable thing about production so far?
Getting to work with people, the different aspects of production, and how it is created.
- What would you say to people who want to be involved in production in future years?
If you are interested in any part of production, give it a go it’s a fun experience and you get to create something amazing.
Do you know what a stage manager does?
A Stage Manager is an important role in a production. They work across all technical areas (costume, props/set, lights, data and sound), supporting others to make sure that they are on track, sharing information between areas and supporting the director. The Stage Manager must create and keep a Prompt Copy which is a detailed copy of the script where blocking notes and technical cues are stored. During our performances, Summer will be responsible for making sure that all of our stagehands are changing the set on the correct cues in-between scenes.

The Bike Doctors continue to repair and rebuild bikes. This year we have two classes who have been working hard at improving their skills. The bike below is an example of how we work. It was donated to us through Geard’s Cycles. The Bike Doctors then went to work and replaced the seat, wheels and tubes, then cleaned, greased, lubed and serviced the bike ready to go out to a family who want to start road cycling and training for triathlons.
We are a true bike collective.
We repair and rebuild bikes.
We gift them to the local community.
We repair and upgrade bikes for students and families.
We give parts to students who want to start their own project.
We thank the many students, staff, families and businesses who donate!
We have fun helping other people!
Read LessHayley, Tori, Sofia, Georgia, Georgia and Danielle- all wonderfully curious, creative and collaborative – applying advanced techniques and presentation to their work. We have entered the Tasmanian Hospitality Schools Challenge with these amazing creations- so fingers crossed for success!

On Monday June 19th our students participated in a career and life planning lesson, this occurs each term. Students were engaged in conversations around what makes someone employable, where different careers can take you, what college is like, explored the Careerify and MyFuture websites, and heard from different industries. Some of the speakers we heard from were from UTAS, Launceston Aquatic Centre, Timberlink, a meteorologist and a pilot. A huge thankyou to the speakers for giving up your time to inform our students of the many opportunities within a career, and what students can be working on now to have the skills an employer is looking for.
Interschool event, 14 June 2022
The Covid era sometimes seems to drag on interminably and has affected our lives in countless ways. In many cases there are social and interpersonal events that are lost to time because of it. But we live in an era of remarkable technology which, while never able to equal the human connections of actually attending public events in person, can offset much of the frustration of students being confined to school campuses for interschool events.
Interschool Chess in Tasmania has access to Tornelo, the digital arena for this Term’s tournament. Tornelo simulates the conditions of a live chess tournament and is used worldwide for competitions of all ages, levels and sectors of society. Based on the other side of Bass Strait, last week it played host to a state-wide competition where our students were able to compete against some of the state’s best young players – and a smattering of mainland students in Victoria and WA.
Eleven Prospect students each played seven hard-fought rounds against automatically placed opponents, between coaching sessions on Zoom using graphics. A highlight was watching Aiden and Hayden (both Yr.7) notch up their first tournament wins. Both students have made great strides to improve their games this year. Another moment was watching big gun Travis (Yr.9) take on the tournament’s elite, coming in as our highest ranked player. He was followed by quiet achiever Wilfred (Yr.9), who vies with Aiden for being Prospect’s most improved player this year. Wilfred finished as our second-highest ranked player.
An enjoyable morning was had by all. While we appreciated the technology involved, all of us are keenly awaiting the chance to return to in-person tournaments in Term 3, which are planned to be held in our region. From there we are a good chance to qualify for Finals in Term 4. Most importantly, the fun, the growth and the spirit shown by our Chess students on the day remains the key. Thanks goes to Narelle Williams for the photos.
Students have been learning the basics of lathe work in the last week. They have also been working on their recumbent bikes.
Bucket hats are available to purchase once again. Orders can be placed on the Qkr app or via the school office. Caps are still available.
