Dear Parents/Guardians, Students and Friends of Prospect High School,
Welcome to the final newsletter for Term 2.
External School Review
This week we have been involved in an external school review. I am very pleased to advise the panel reported some very positive findings including:
- There is a strong collegial and professional staff culture which is driven by a desire to see all students learn and succeed at Prospect High.
- The tone of the school reflects a shared commitment to improvements in student academic and wellbeing outcomes. The improvement agenda is clearly evident. There is a calm orderly feel to the campus and the school has worked to create an attractive physical environment that supports learning.
- Respectful, polite and caring relationships are fostered and seen in the way staff, families and students interact and the way in which they speak of the school.
Findings from the panel also affirmed our future direction with teaching and learning including further developing understandings and use of our instructional model, increasing our feedback culture and exploring more avenues for student voice and agency.
NAIDOC Week
This week has been NAIDOC week and there have been opportunities to participate in a range of activities in English, HASS, Foods and Art and also a flag raising ceremony to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. One notable activity at Prospect High School was a Bush Tucker lunch prepared by Mrs McMahon’s 9/10 Food By Design class. Venison pie, salt and pepper crocodile and bush herbs were a feature as well as authentic table ware and decorations. Students enjoyed eating their meals in the Café.
Parent-Teacher-Student Conferences
Thank you to the many parents and students who attended parent teacher at Prospect High School. Although telephone or online conversations were offered, face-to-face was the preferred option. It was pleasing to hear conversations were predominantly about strategies in which students could improve their progress/results and the support teachers could offer.
School Association
The next meeting of the School Association will be held on Tuesday 9th August at 5pm in D block. Please come along and join discussions and planning for our wonderful school. Among other things we will review findings from the External School Review.
In conclusion I would like to wish everyone a relaxing and safe holiday. A reminder that Monday 25th July is a Student Free Day.
Looking forward to seeing students on Tuesday 26th July.
Kind regards
Lee Barker

Today a range of Grade 9-12 Hospitality and Catering students visited TAFE Drysdale as part of the Tasmanian Hospitality Association Industry Showcase. Each group got to learn and experience a task in the areas of front of house, back of house, bar (mocktails) and barista. The students learnt about the different trainer experiences and also were able to ask questions about TAFE courses and apprenticeships.
It was a wonderful hands-on experience which was enjoyed by all and I was really impressed with the student’s behaviour and attention.
Big thanks to the THA for running the event and TAFE Drysdale for use of their excellent facilities.

Prospect Senior Secondary Parent Teacher
On Monday Prospect High Senior Secondary held their Parent/Student/Teacher conference in The Nest Café. It was a chance for students to show off their Hospitality skills as they prepared refreshments for the guests and chatted with the warm afternoon sun streaming through our café windows. Jan Phillips displayed recent student artwork- watercolours and acrylics inspired by the famous and much loved art teacher and recent social media celebrity Bob Ross. Huge thanks to all the parents who came to talk to students and teachers in their school environment.
Next term we will be further consolidating learning as our budding entrepreneurs plan, develop and present an enterprise which will combine all their skills in English, Maths, Hospitality and Digital Arts into a term long project that reflects their interest and skills. More exciting information to come.

Students this week completed their 10 week program with a visit to Cory Hearn Personal Training. All students can be proud of their work, which will hopefully assist them on their life journey. We now look forward to our new group starting in term 3.
On 24th June a group of PHS students had a fantastic day at the Girls on Track event held at the Peppers Silo Hotel.
This was a unique opportunity to get an insight into the motorsport world. The goal of these events is to inspire and encourage an interest in STEM subjects and industries amongst schoolgirls, with the aim of increasing female participation in these sectors and using motorsport as a tool to expose them to the incredible opportunities and career paths.
Motorsport activities and workshops are used as a tool to expose the girls to the various career pathways in the sport.
Half Year Foods by Design - NAIDOC Week
On Wednesday as part of recognising NAIDOC week, students in Half Year Foods by Design celebrated indigenous bush food flavours and enjoyed a lunch in The Nest Café.
We tasted venison and pepper berry pie, pork ribs in a bush tomato bbq sauce, native dukkah with fresh baked focaccia and ‘salt and pepper’ crocodile (using pepperberry, lemon myrtle and bush tomato) with a mango chilli sauce. We finished our feast with rich wattleseed brownies.
As a class we talked about the native ingredients that are now readily accessible (especially locally) and how they can be used with our usual food staples to create delicious dishes. We discussed how First Nation’s Peoples also use some of these ingredients for medicinal and ceremonial purposes and the impact of hunting on crocodiles (now a protected species) – and recent expansion of croc farming for skins and meat. Locally we talked about control of feral pests such as deer.

On Friday 1st July Beacon Foundation and Federal Group held a Hospitality Polish Session. With the help of these amazing mentors Prospect Senior Secondary and High School students were able to gain insight into working in the hospitality industry- particularly at Federal and also build interpersonal skills to be confident in applying for positions. They were encouraged to develop their ‘elevator’ pitch which would succinctly deliver a positive message about their interests and aspirations. We finished the day with a networking lunch and mock interviews with the mentors who gave feedback and helped students communicate effectively.
Thanks to Beacon and Federal for the rewarding and wonderful opportunity!

Students in Mrs Viney’s Half Year Art Class have finished the term by working with charcoal. They have experimented with drawing still life arrangements and landscapes, and are now planning a mixed-media piece to combine the charcoal techniques learnt, with a blend of other mediums such as paint, collage, marker and pencil. The images shared here demonstrate the unique approaches, and skill, of the students as they responded to the still life arrangements. Well done to the class for a fantastic term!
Bucket hats are available to purchase once again. Orders can be placed on the Qkr app or via the school office. Caps are still available.
