Dear Parents/Guardians, Students and Friends of Prospect High School,
Teacher Assistants Thank You
This week has been Teacher Assistant Appreciation week. I would like to thank and acknowledge our Teacher Assistants for the tireless support they give teachers in classrooms, on excursions and in the grounds. While Teacher Assistants often have specific times and specific students to work with, they go above and beyond, helping many students and spending their own time supporting students. A BIG thank you to all Teacher Assistants for the support of learners, parents and staff.
Career and Life Planning Day
Prospect High School has a co-ordinated whole school approach called Career and Life Planning. Through this curriculum students learn skills, knowledge and understandings to make informed decisions about work and career pathways and life decisions essential to an individual’s social and economic wellbeing and that of the broader community. Career and Life Planning together with our partnership with the Beacon Foundation engage with local and Tasmanian businesses and industries to link education with students’ future employment options. Last week students in Grades 7-9 had various presentations and guests to assist with future career paths – including resume writing, Timberlink site tour, leadership session, part-time employment options. Grade 10 students spent the day at Launceston College and this week Newstead College becoming familiar with course offerings and facilities.
Northern Collective “Taster” Days 2022
The Northern Collective Schools which include Brooks, Exeter, Kings Meadows, Launceston Big Picture School, Lilydale, Prospect, Queechy, and Riverside will be holding open days next week. Each of these secondary schools offers specialised VET and/or TASC programmes. The Open Days are designed to give interested students in grades 10 and 11 an opportunity to learn more about the programmes, participate in activities, meet the teachers, and explore the Senior Secondary space at the respective school. To attend the Open Day, students will be transported to and from the school and their grade teacher will accompany them. Prospect High School will be showcasing our offerings: Hands on Hospitality and Tourism and Personal Health and Wellbeing and Japanese on Monday 5th September 10.00-12.00pm. Information can be obtained from Gr 10 Care teachers and Mrs Pollard.
School Satisfaction Surveys - Student, Parent and Staff
This year, School Satisfaction Surveys for students, parents and staff will be conducted from 29 August to 23 September 2022. These surveys contain questions on a range of matters about our school. This survey provides an opportunity for students, parents and staff to give important feedback which will be treated as confidential and anonymous. Feedback is valued by our school as a means of identifying what the school does well and opportunities for the school to make improvements. Although voluntary I encourage you to participate and complete the survey to assist the school when planning for future programs and services for students.
The survey is open NOW until Friday 23 September 2022 and should take about 5 minutes to complete. https://ncv.microsoft.com/k12V8zo8DG
Each family should nominate one person to fill in this survey for their child(ren).
Take the online survey by clicking this link or pasting it in your browser: https://ncv.microsoft.com/k12V8zo8DG
The survey is carried out on a secure website and all responses are anonymous and confidential. All families in this school receive the same survey link and no identifying information is collected. A summary of the survey results will be provided to schools. Responses from individuals or small groups will NOT be disclosed to any Department of Education staff. Please contact your school if you require any assistance.
Kind regards
Lee Barker

Aladdin and Ensemble
- Why did you want to be involved in this production?
I have been interested in drama ever since the first time I entered the drama room in grade seven! When I saw the ‘Wizard of Oz’ production in 2019, I knew I really wanted to be a part of a large-scale production with Prospect High School.
- Who is your favourite character and why?
Other than Aladdin ?! my favourite characters are the Genie and my ‘thick as thieves’ pals Babkak, Omar, & Kassim. The Genie is a really fun, bubbly character and they know they are powerful. My pals are also fun characters because through smart witty comments, they help Aladdin set wrong to right.
- What is your role in this production and what are you enjoying about it?
In this production I am playing ‘Aladdin.’ This role is incredibly fun to play, having many conflicts, touching scenes with his love interest Jasmine, many great songs, and so much more. Aladdin is close to his ma, even though she is in heaven, he still tries to please her at every chance he gets.
- What has been the biggest challenge for you so far?
Production rehearsals have been relatively cruisy, however with double casting it can get confusing who is on stage and who isn’t. If we fall behind schedule it also becomes hard, not that this is a bad thing, but it slows down the pace of production. Other than this, production is pretty relaxed (for now!).
- What are you most excited for?
I am exhilarated to see the pieces of our production come together. This will be brilliant as our cast is doing such an excellent job getting there!
- What has been the most enjoyable thing about production?
THE CAST!! The production cast has been an absolute dream to work with. Regardless of the role size, everyone performs their roles so well! I have loved every moment working with this cast.
- What would you say to people who want to be involved in production in future years?
Go for it!! Production is so much fun! Grasp all opportunities it faces you with and do them with pride. If you do not feel confident enough to act on stage, a production needs so much more than just that. It needs people to make props, be stagehands, a stage manager, costume makers, a band, and more. So many great opportunities!

On behalf of all Prospect High School staff and students, we want to say a big THANK YOU for the support and hard work displayed daily by our fantastic Teacher Assistants. This week is TA appreciation week and we wish to acknowledge the positive impact these staff members have on our students, which is felt from a student level, as well as from the teaching staff and the whole school community.
We would like to acknowledge your dedication to our school and continually demonstrating our school values. We recognise Robyn, Deb, Jess, Shane, Matt, Andrew, Alec, Liona, Brayden, Tom, Damon, Josh, Sharon, and Narelle. These staff are all a crucial part of our school here at Prospect High School and we celebrated them this week. Please note some staff were absent for the below photos.
Last week our students were engaged in a range of career and life planning activities. Grade 7’s heard from some of our grade 9 students and their employers, and grade 8’s had an introduction to resume writing. Grade 9’s opted in to 1 of 3 sessions – SLB preparation, time management and checklists for work, while the grade 10’s had their first College Open Day at Launceston College. A small group of interested grade 8 students visited Timberlink on a site tour and gained an insight into what careers are available within the company. Lots of great information and skills gained for all our students!
Students Past and Present Take to the Stage
In addition to Millie and Jamisen who we celebrated last issue for their amazing performances in The Lion King Jr, produced by Stage Right Youth Theatre Ensemble, we would like to take this opportunity to celebrate other Prospect High Students who have taken to the stage in the past two weeks.
On Friday 19th August, the 9/10 Production, Dance and 8 Drama classes travelled to Newstead College to view the stage adaptation of Freaky Friday. The show was a lot of fun featuring song, movement, comedy and drama, all supported by effective technical elements. It was wonderful to see past students Tiana and Charles on stage, both in significant roles, and to know that another past student, Seth, was working on the technical elements. A big well done to all three!
On the weekend following, our current Grade 10 student Charlotte, was also taking to the stage. She performed as part of the Launceston Youth Theatre Ensemble in a parody of Shakespeare's Macbeth: Scotch on the Rocks, which was a comedic and high energy take on the original. Fantastic work Charlotte!
Finally, well done to Grade 9 student Taylah who has been involved in many theatrical pursuits this year, including the Launceston Competitions, Miss B's Showing Off, and most recently, the Saint Cecilia Performance Challenge. Well done Taylah!
Participation in events such as these requires a great deal of commitment and time. Students must be creative, motivated, and resilient. They must be able to manage their time well, work collaboratively and seek and take on feedback - all learning dispositions which we value here at Prospect High School.
There are many more events coming up involving PHS students including the Rock Challenge and Schools Spectacular. If you are involved in an event outside of school, we would love to hear about it and to help to celebrate your success!
Read LessValkommen! On Wednesday HY Foods visited Sweden in our lunchtime enjoying a smorgasbord of traditional and street food. The most popular dishes were turnbrodsrulle (Frankfurt, mash and gherkins in a wrap) and of course waffles. Shane Steer bought in a freshly caught trout and we cured it gravadlax style- yum! The food looked amazing and I was proud of the class for trying new things in a creative and collaborative way!
Friday 26th August saw a fantastic gathering of staff and students in the Grade 7 courtyard for the SLB/Production BBQ.
The BBQ was a huge success with over $450 raised to go towards our school production of Aladdin Jr. Not only were the sausages and cupcakes delicious, but the highlight of the event was Disney themed karaoke performed by both staff and students.
Check out the video of the event on our social media pages. A big thank you to Baxters IGA Prospect for their generous donation towards the event, and to all of the staff and students who worked behind the scenes and participated.
In remote Communities across Australia there are often no libraries or bookstores. Access to reading material is extremely limited and this impacts the achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children. The Indigenous Literacy Foundation is a national book industry charity working with these remote Communities to support reading and learning. Through ILF’s programs, books are gifted, some translated into First Languages, and others are created by Communities. ILF have gifted 636,100 books to date, to hundreds of schools, health care centres and service organisations and reached over 400 remote Communities across Australia, including Cape Barron Island.
As part of the Book Week celebrations the library held a Great Book Swap, a major fundraiser for the foundation and raised $141.50. Thank you to those who donated and purchased books during the week.

Prospect High School Artz Bazaar and Raffle
In Week 9 (Tuesday 20th September), Prospect High School will be hosting our major whole school arts celebration event… The Prospect High School Arts Bazaar! In this evening event, we will celebrate the work of students in the creative arts across grades 7-12 in Visual Art, Dance, Drama and our Tier 2 creative classes.
Visitors will enter via The Eagles Nest Café and the evening will begin with a visual arts gallery and live musical performances. As visitors make their way towards the Drama/Dance Studio, they will then enter a ‘Bazaar’ market style event, where students who have engaged in Tier 2 classes will have the opportunity to display and sell their ‘wares’ and to hold stalls and activities (we will advertise these closer to the event!). For a bit of fun, this year’s Arts Evening will be themed around ‘Aladdin and Arabian Nights’ – so bring the family and bring your ‘gold’! (Cash only sales.)
For the first time, this event will include the drawing of our BIG Arts Raffle, with a Prize Pool of just under $500 donated by local businesses! The prizes include: Two VIP tickets to Encore Theatre Company’s Jersey Boys in October at the Princess Theatre, a voucher to Paint the Town Red, a ukulele, kindly donated by Barrett’s Music, an art pack featuring over $130 worth of art products from Pearts Variety Store, artwork by a local artist inspired by Aladdin, and a Hamper of Middle-Eastern themed goodies put together by the Catering and Hands-On Hospitality Classes. A BIG thank you to the businesses who have supported us.
Raffle tickets are now on sale. These will be available from the school office to purchase separately, or you can elect to take home a book of 10 to sell. We will be inviting all families of students involved in the Production and Arts Evening to take home a book of 10 raffle tickets to sell ($2 each, or 3 for $5), with a reminder that those purchasing tickets should be 18 years or older. Books will need to be returned to the office by Monday 19th September. There will also be sales at the Arts Evening before the draw at 5:50pm. If you do not wish to sell tickets, please return the book to the school office. Funds will be going towards the costs of mounting the production including costumes, venue, equipment and personnel hire and licencing fees. As this is a school show, ticket prices to see the actual production have been kept low and the production is a non-profit event.
The Arts Bazaar will culminate in formal performances of Dance, Drama and Musical Items in the Drama/Dance Studio from approximately 6pm-7:30pm. These performances will include items for the Launceston Competitions, Rock Challenge, in-class projects and out of school endeavours. Most excitingly, it will also include some sneak-previews of Aladdin characters and a dance item from our show in November! Due to safety precautions, seating will be limited for the formal performances in the studio. All performers in the studio will be given 2 tickets for their families. If you require more, please contact the office when the tickets are released (we will give good notice before we release them). The tickets will be free to this event, as their only purpose is to enable us to adhere to COVID-19 safety guidelines. The room will have cooling and be well-ventilated.
So… get on your flying carpet and join us at the Prospect High School Arts Bazaar! We look forward to seeing many of our families there to celebrate the students in this informal event!
