Dear Parents/Carers, Friends and members of the Prospect High School community,
Career and Life Planning Workshop
Last week Prospect High students participated in a Career and Life Planning activity as part of a series that supports careers in the ‘Building and Construction’ sector, through a partnership between Beacon and Keystone Tasmania. The ‘Building Careers in Tasmania’ project supports students to understand key skills, attributes, and pathways into this growth industry. Students were able to put their skills to practice with mock interviews run by the business mentors. Many thanks to all mentors who gave up their time to support this program which include: Keystone Tasmania, Tas City Building, Beacon Foundation, Tamika Johnston and Degree C Tasmania.
SES Presentation
Recently grade 10 students engaged in a SES presentation as part of their Drivers Ed unit in Health. Neil and Frances spoke to students about road accidents, causes and statistics using known scenarios and experiences. They also showed students their vehicle and equipment.
NAPLAN
Individual NAPLAN reports have now been provided to students or posted for families. If parents and carers did not receive the NAPLAN report, please contact us. Please note that NAPLAN will be in Term 1 next year.
Arts Bazaar
The Arts team recently held a very successful Arts Bazaar showcasing and celebrating student work as well as raising funds for our school production, Aladdin JR which will be held in November. Congratulations to all involved in organising and producing the Arts Bazaar. A great range of activities, displays, and performances were included in the program. Thank you to catering students who made a lovely range of Middle Eastern delights. It was lovely to see so many families come along to support this event. Congratulations again and well done.
RYDA excursion
Each year Grade 10 students are invited to attend a RYDA session at Symmons Plains. This acronym stands for Rotary Youth Driver Awareness and is a road safety program facilitated by Rotary and other professionals. Although students may not be driving yet, staying safe on our roads as both drivers and passengers was the emphasis of the day. Presenters included Road Safety experts, driving instructors, police, people who had been in car accidents and survived and drug and alcohol educators. Students found this day to be very worthwhile and will provide students with five hours of time towards their learner’s licence. Thank you to our Grade 10 teaching team for organising and supervising this event.
Transition
Grade 6 students from our feeder primary schools spent the day yesterday enjoying activities as part of the transition program. This is one of many planned events aimed to help grade 6 students become familiar with our context and learning so they can have a smooth start to high school next year. Students were treated to some eats and music performances and a range of activities that included: Basketball, Art, Netball, Fitness, Science, Chess, Mountain biking. Many thanks to Mr Bergamin and Mr Poke for organising this.
Department of Education Name Change
The Department of Education and some services from Communities Tasmania will combine to form the new Department for Education, Children and Young People from 1st October. Schools will continue to have a focus on building relationships and serving our school community. Families have been sent a letter of explanation from Tim Bullard, the Secretary of the Department of Education, please see this letter below in Newsletter.

REMINDER - Change to Payment at the Canteen in Term 4
- As Covid restrictions are easing, usual PHS routines and procedures are coming back into play.
- As of Term 4, students will not be able to pay for items at the canteen with phones or smart watches.
- To support this expectation students are encouraged, this term (as of now) to pay by cash, card or use the QKR app.
- We encourage students to start to organise themselves to pay without their phone (eg order a bank card if they don’t have one, organise lunch money).
Thanks for your support.
Hello PHS!
During school holidays Mental Health Week will be running from 8th to 16th October. This year’s theme is ‘Awareness, Belonging & Connection’.
Awareness is understanding what you need to look after and maintain your mental health and knowing when or where to get help if needed. Taking a holiday/break, exercise and listening to music are all great ways to look after your mental health.
Belonging is looking out for each other, realising you are never alone and feeling safe and supported. Check in on your mates!
Connection is about relationships with the people in your life – family, friends, work mates and teammates. These networks help to provide happiness and health.

Senior Secondary @ Prospect have been exploring different business enterprises as part of their Enterprise at Work subject this term. The students have had to research, develop and market their products and use a budget to allocate prices. The following products are for sale- please see posters for details on how to purchase ?
Brad has developed a fidget spinner using repurposed bike chains from Bike Doctors. A great way to combine his passion for this TIER program and use up unwanted bike parts.
Tristian has turned his hand to preparing and cooking popular cinnamon and filled donuts from scratch. This process takes a couple of days as he uses the slower cool proving method to ensure a light fluffy donut.
Mia is utilising another sustainable resource- this time the spent coffee grounds from our Nest Café. Mia has combined the grounds, essential oils, coconut oil and vanilla to create a soothing hand scrub which feels and smells amazing.
Jorja and Trishelle decided to spread a positive mental health message by printing t-shirts. The two students have designed and cut the graphics for the shirts on a cricut machine and ironed them onto Australian cotton shirts.
Ryan has capitalised on his love of trivia and is developing a pizza and trivia competition for grades to be held in The Nest Café. Watch this space for details!
Adrienne McMahon
