Dear Parents/Guardians, Students and Friends of Prospect High School,
What a busy time since the last newsletter. It was very enjoyable watching many games and observing the great sportsmanship and participation recently in the Northern High Schools Basketball Competition. In addition, we had excellent representation in the Cricket Gala Day, Northern High Schools Sports Association Inter-High Athletics Carnival and Tasmanian Schools Triathlon Challenge.
Prospect High School Production - Aladdin
I had great pleasure on Wednesday evening to attend our wonderful production, Aladdin at the Earl Arts Theatre. This truly was a professional and entertaining production, showcasing the talents of performers from Years 8-10. Students studying drama, music and dance worked together for many weeks preparing to perform in front of audiences from primary schools, families and members of the community. Their commitment to learning lines and rehearsals certainly made this an outstanding performance. Many thanks to Mrs Genevieve Viney, Ms Ellie Couch and Mr Tony Gutierrez for their guidance and support of students and the many hours given of their own time. Thanks to staff, students and volunteers who helped with props, publicity, sound and lighting. Finally thank you to families and friends who came along to watch performances.
Year 6 Orientation Day
On Wednesday we had the pleasure of welcoming Year 6 students from our feeder and associated primary schools for Orientation Day. Students spent the day experiencing a variety of activities and becoming familiar with our resources and context to make the first day of Year 7 run smoothly. Facebook showed some great photos of students enjoying the day. Thanks to Mr Mario Bergamin, Mr Brendan Poke and Mr Brendan Liddell for organising the day and to teachers who ran activities. Special mention to Year 9 students who did an awesome job welcoming and helping Year 6 students throughout the day. Skyla, Isabella, Hannah, Mahalia, Will, Ava, Logan, Tiquiri, Hunter, Angus, Jeb and Riley were wonderful ambassadors for Prospect High School.
End of year reports
A reminder to families that end of year reports will be sent home in the final week of this term.

Finally, in an earlier assembly, I encouraged students to finish the term well. I asked students to find that extra bit of motivation and persistence so they can put effort into learning and assessment tasks in the next four weeks so they finish well. I would also ask for parents to support students to complete all their work so that they will receive the best results possible. Thanks in advance for your support.
Kind regards
Lee Barker
Principal

COVID-safe behaviours remain an important part of taking care of each other for the foreseeable future. We all need to play our part to protect ourselves from COVID-19 and take care of the people around us.
This week our grade 9 classes began working with Kylea and Callan. We learnt more about mental health, Grit G.O.A.Ts, how to look out for our mates, the importance of kindness and how to add to our own toolbox. What a valuable and interactive session with really important messages! The rest of grade 9's will be participating in the session over the coming weeks.
High Schools Triathlon Challenge
Well done to our fantastic triathletes who all did an amazing job at the High Schools Triathlon Challenge in Devonport. All our students who were there represented our school incredibly well. A big thank you must also go to the families who organised transport for the students to and from the event.
On Wednesday afternoon, 16th November, the 9/10 Child Studies class held a playgroup for families of the community. We had several families come and enjoy a variety of activities that the students had organised for the children, including playdough, arts and craft, block building, animal hunt in rice and bowling. The activities were enjoyed by all, both children and students, with the room filled with lots of chatter and laughter. Thank you to all the families that came along and participated in a fun filled afternoon.
ATTENTION Grade 9 Students - Leavers Varsity Jacket

We were lucky enough to take a group of grade 9/10 students on site tours at Fairbrother, Anstie Construction and Merit Joinery. Students got to see the in’s and outs of commercial and residential sites, and a workshop. This was the last activity for the ‘Building Careers in Tasmania’ program through our Keystone partnership with Beacon, and our favourite! Thanks for having us Fairbrother, Anstie Constructions and Merit Joinery.
Last week a number of students participated in the Div 1 Aths carnival. All students need to be congratulated for their comraderie, effort and the way in which they represented PHS with pride.
State Finals
Monday 31 October
Prospect’s qualification for the State chess finals represents a significant step in the post-pandemic rebirth of the game at the school. (Not that we are out of the COVID woods yet of course…) This coincides with the observation I gathered on the day that chess is experiencing a boom in Tasmania at present – particularly northern Tas.
Scotch Oakburn College was the venue for a convergence of some of the sharpest young chess minds from around the state. The all-day event was split into secondary and primary camps and featured nine rounds of 15-minute games, timed by proper chess clocks.
Competitors were entered into the Tornelo database and ranked according to their cumulative results. The more rounds they played, the more evenly matched their opponents. It was a great taste of a professionally run tournament and a commendable achievement for Prospect’s five selected representatives, all from Year 9:
Liam, Travis, Marco, Ash and Wilfred.
During the day, players had access to coaches with decades of experience. They were able to be immersed in the “culture” of chess, as well as meet competitive peers from around the state. Another strength of chess tournaments is the level playing field: students from a wide variety of schools mingle and study strategy informally together in between games.
The event was the perfect opportunity to develop strategies to compete at a higher level under pressure. Competitive chess has endless potential to extend learning faculties and brain power. These include critical and creative thinking, pattern visualisation and higher order concentration skills. Like with athletic ability in sport, these cognitive abilities approach their peak when players are still in their youth.
Our students rose to the challenge. Prospect finished 9th out of the 11 competing secondary schools, a fine achievement given that we were the only public high school in Launceston and that it was the first state finals experience for this cohort. All have the opportunity to represent Prospect as Year 10s in 2023 and go one better – individually and as a team – if they want it. Emerging players at Years 7 and 8 this year are hugely encouraged to take the next step next year as well.
Liam emerged as our leading player on the day with a 5:4 ratio – a tremendous result. The other players were not far behind, each recording several wins.
Thanks is owed to James Briant, tournament organiser and facilitator; the Scotch Oakburn middle school community for offering their space and finally, Prospect’s tireless admin team in their support of all the logistics.
All seven pictures capture the day’s focus!
St Patrick’s College “friendly” / “derby”
On Wednesday afternoon 2nd November, fourteen students from Years 7-9 accepted the invitation to visit our neighbours “over the road” (St Pat’s) for a friendly, informal chess tournament. The session was most of all serving the wider purpose of building a shared culture of chess and love for the game between the two neighbouring schools. We hope to continue this next year. The afternoon lived up to its theme of “friendly” interaction over chess and a fun session was had by all. We hope to reciprocate the hosting next year and continue building the local chess alliance!
